Consolidating balance sheet

The accounting standards and policies and valuation criteria used in preparing the accompanying consolidated financial statements are as follows: All financial instruments are initially accounted for at fair value which, unless there is evidence to the contrary, shall be the transaction price.

All the changes in the fair value of the financial instruments, except in trading derivatives, arising from the accrual of interests and similar items are recognized under the headings “Interest and similar income” or “Interest and similar expenses”, as appropriate, in the accompanying consolidated income statement for the year in which the accrual took place (see Note 39).

In terms of its consolidation, the BBVA Group is made up of three types of companies: subsidiaries, jointly controlled entities and associates.

Subsidiaries are companies controlled by the Group (for a more detailed definition of subsidiaries and the criterion for control, see Appendix XIII, Glossary).

The amounts recognized under the headings “Valuation adjustments - Available-for-sale financial assets” and “Valuation adjustments - Exchange differences” continue to form part of the Group's consolidated equity until the corresponding asset is derecognized from the consolidated balance sheet or until an impairment loss is recognized in the corresponding financial instrument.

Note 3 includes information related to the main subsidiaries in the Group as of December 31, 2012.The gains from sales of other equity instruments considered strategic investments included under “Available-for-sale financial assets” are recognized under the heading “Gains (losses) in non-current assets held-for-sale not classified as discontinued operations” in the consolidated income statement, even if they had not been classified in a previous balance sheet as non-current assets held for sale (see Note 52).The net impairment losses in “Available-for-sale financial assets” over the year are recognized under the heading “Impairment losses on financial assets (net) – Other financial instruments not at fair value through profit or loss” (see Note 49) in the consolidated income statements for that period. The financial statements of the subsidiaries are consolidated with those of the Bank using the global integration method. The share of non-controlling interests from subsidiaries in the Group’s consolidated equity is presented under the heading “Non-controlling interests” in the consolidated balance sheet.
